New evidence on taxes and portfolio choice

    Get PDF
Identifying the effect of differential taxation on portfolio allocation requires exogenous variation in marginal tax rates. Marginal tax rates vary with income, but income surely affects portfolio choice directly. In systems of individual taxation – like Canada’s – couples with the same household income can face different effective tax rates on capital income when labor income is distributed differently within households. Using this source of variation we find statistically significant but economically modest responses to taxation. In a “placebo” test, using data from the U.S. (which has joint taxation), we find no effect of the intra-household distribution of labor income on portfolios

Emission-Line Fluxes of Northern Planetary Nebulae

    Get PDF
We present long slit spectrophotometric emission line fluxes of bright and extended (<5 arcsec in diameter) Planetary Nebulae (PNe) selected from Acker et al. 1992 catalog with suitable equitorial coordinates for Northern hemisphere. In total, 17 PNe have been choosen and observed in 2008--2010. To measure absolute fluxes, broad slit sizes, ranging from 3.5\arcsec to 7.5\arcsec were used and thus equivalent widths of all observable emission line fluxes were also calculated. Among 17 PNe's observed, line flux measurements of 12 of them were made for the first time. This work also aims to extend the sky coverage of emission line flux standards in Northern hemisphere (Dopita & Hua 1997 - 52 PNe in Southern hemisphere; Wright et al. 2005 - 6 PNe in Northern hemisphere). Electron temperatures and densities, and chemical abundances of these PNe were also calculated in this work. These data is expected to lead the photometric or spectrometric further work for absolute emission line flux measurements needed for \hii regions, supernova remnants etc.Comment: 24 pages, 3 Figures, 21 Tables, Accepted for publication in Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australi

Bireylerin Sosyal Algı ve Sosyalleşme Düzeylerinin Gelişiminde Rekreasyonel Uygulamaların Önemi,

    Get PDF

Synthesis of 3-aroyl-4-aryl-1-isopropylamino-4-piperidinols and evaluation of the cytotoxicities of the compounds against human hepatoma and breast cancer cell lines

Some 4-piperidinol derivatives were synthesized and their cytotoxicity was tested against human hepatoma (Huh7) and breast cancer (T47D) cells. Aryl part was changed as phenyl in 2a, 4-methylphenyl in 2b, 4-methoxyphenyl in 2c, 4-chlorophenyl in 2d, 4-fluorophenyl in 2e, 4-bromophenyl in 2f, 4-nitrophenyl in 2g and 2-thienyl in 3. Compounds were synthesized and reported for the first time by this study except 2a and 2d. Chemical structures were confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR, MS and elemental analyses. Compounds 2a (3.1 times), 2c (3.8 times), 2f (4.6 times), 2g (1.3 times) and 3 (3.2 times) had 1.3-4.6 times higher cytotoxic potency than the reference compound 5-FU against Huh7 cell line while all the compounds synthesized had shown lower activities against T47D cell line than 5-FU. In the light of these results, compounds 2a, 2c, 2f, 2g and 3 may serve as model compounds for further studies. © 2014 Informa UK Ltd

The purpose of this research is to analyze the attitudes of student-athletes towards sports who played in Universities Volleyball Second League competitions held in Antalya on 16th-27th December 2014. Target population of the study is composed of the student-athletes studying in universities in Turkey and playing in the volleyball teams of universities at the same time, and the sample group of the study is composed of 23 studentathletes from different universities who participated in Universities Volleyball Second League held in Antalya on 16th-27th December 2014. With the purpose of determining the attitudes of student-athletes towards sports, the participants were applied a survey. SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) for Windows 21.0 program was used in the analysis of data. Descriptive statistics, t-test for determining the difference between two groups, One-way Anova test for comparisons of more than two groups were used in analysis of data. It has been found that attitude scores of all participants towards sports are high and attitude scores of female students towards sports are higher than those of male students. In conclusion, it has been determined that the attitudes of students playing in the volleyball teams of universities towards sports are positive. It has also been demonstrated that the attitude towards sports by the sex variable is higher in favor of female students; however, such variables as family educational background, income, age and grade point average don't create difference for the attitude towards sports

Right atrioventricular thrombus was diagnosed by echocardiography in a 14-year-old boy. Thrombus was reached through the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery and it was caused to tricuspit valve insufficiency. Surgical thrombectomy was performed and, he was treated with oral anticoagulation in postoperative period

Regular Physical Exercise Modulates Iron Homeostasis in the 5xFAD Mouse Model of Alzheimer’s Disease

Dysregulation of brain iron metabolism is one of the pathological features of aging and Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive memory loss and cognitive impairment. While physical inactivity is one of the risk factors for AD and regular exercise improves cognitive function and reduces pathology associated with AD, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The purpose of the study is to explore the effect of regular physical exercise on modulation of iron homeostasis in the brain and periphery of the 5xFAD mouse model of AD. By using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and a variety of biochemical techniques, we measured total iron content and level of proteins essential in iron homeostasis in the brain and skeletal muscles of sedentary and exercised mice. Long-term voluntary running induced redistribution of iron resulted in altered iron metabolism and trafficking in the brain and increased iron content in skeletal muscle. Exercise reduced levels of cortical hepcidin, a key regulator of iron homeostasis, coupled with interleukin-6 (IL-6) decrease in cortex and plasma. We propose that regular exercise induces a reduction of hepcidin in the brain, possibly via the IL-6/STAT3/JAK1 pathway. These findings indicate that regular exercise modulates iron homeostasis in both wild-type and AD mice
